Fundamentals of Hmong History and Culture
4 Weeks | Introductory | 8 Sessions (2 sessions/week)
Focus
A foundational understanding of Hmong history, culture, social organization, religion, migration, and contemporary transformation—designed to build historical literacy, cultural competence, and intergenerational understanding.
Key Questions
- Who are the Hmong, and how did their history shape their worldview?
- How are Hmong families, clans, gender roles, and leadership traditionally organized?
- What do Hmong religious beliefs and cosmology teach us about life, illness, and morality?
- What challenges did Hmong refugees face after arriving in the United States?
- How has Hmong culture changed in response to Christianity, Buddhism, politics, and media?
- What does it mean to be Hmong today?
